40 DAYS of PURPOSE

Discover Your Life's Purpose

February 22nd - April 4th, 2004

Sugar Creek's 40 Days has concluded, however, we'll keep this info available on the web as a reference and resource to anyone reviewing the material and for other churches going through 40 Days of Purpose!

A special message from Julie Baliva, 40 Days of Purpose Campaign Director

Have you ever wondered, “What on earth am I here for?” Do you think you may have missed God’s will for your life? Join us for the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign to learn God’s five purposes for your life, then put the purposes into practice through the personal disciplines, group connections, and church-wide events that will take place during the six weeks of this spiritual growth Campaign. Imagine the impact on our community if all of us at Sugar Creek were committed to living out God’s purposes for our lives! Bring a friend along with you, and start living a purpose-driven life.

The Campaign encourages participation in worship, small group Bible study, and personal settings.  This emphasis will answer life's most important question through teaching you how and why God created you with five purposes in mind:

  • Worship - you were planned for God's pleasure.

  • Fellowship - you were formed to be part of God's family.

  • Discipleship - you were created to become like Christ.

  • Ministry - you were shaped for God's service.

  • Mission - you were made to tell others about Christ.

Here’s how you can be a part of the 40 Days of Purpose:

1.   Attend the “40 Days of Purpose” kick-off Sunday at Sugar Creek!  The week before the Campaign starts, please join us Sunday, February 15th at 10:00am for the National Broadcast. This will be an inspirational kick-off for the Campaign where we will join with the hundreds of other churches who are doing this Campaign concurrently with us, and listen to a life-changing challenge from the author of the book on which the Campaign is based, The Purpose Driven Life by Pastor Rick Warren.

This is such an important event that we are beginning our day with a very special gourmet tea/coffee and pastries from 8:30 to 9:30am followed by, special  gathering music 9:30 -10:00am. A combined worship service and National Broadcast will begin at 10:00am. Following the special broadcast service, there will be a light luncheon served in the fellowship hall.

During this time, you may sign up for host homes or small groups to be held at the church. Books will also be available at this time.

A special invitation from Pastor Tom and Janice!

    2.   Commit to attend all of the weekend worship services and hear the life changing messages:

Memory verse:  For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.  Ephesians 2:10

Memory verse:  "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."  Mark 12:30

Memory verse:  "So in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others."  Romans 12:5

Memory verse:  "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus."  Philippians 2:5

Memory verse:  "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others."  1 Peter 4:10

Memory verse:  "Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity." Colossians 4:5

3.    Sign up to be in an exciting 40 Days of Purpose small group Bible study.  If you haven’t signed up already to be in one of these small groups, then you may fill out one of the 40 Days of Purpose Group cards in your bulletin, send an e-mail to 40Days@sugarcreek.org, or call the church office, today.  The small groups will view a short video each week and then discuss the impact of the book and the message from the previous Sunday.

This is pivotal for you if you wish to get the most out of the Campaign, because it is in a group that you will explore each of the purposes more deeply. There is something about being able to discuss the deeper principles of life with others that makes truths sink more deeply and causes profound change to take place. If you are in a small group already, sign up anyway! We are encouraging existing small groups to disband temporarily for the six weeks of the Campaign, and have each member start or join these special 40 Days of Purpose groups.

4.     Read The Purpose Driven Life.    We ask you to commit to read a chapter a day for 40 days with your family starting on Sunday, Feb. 22nd.  We also hope you will participate in a small group or attend a Purpose Driven Sunday School class, and attend the weekend worship services.

We want you to fully experience the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign.  One of the ways to do this is by purchasing and reading The Purpose Driven Life.  The retail price on this book is $19.99.  (You can usually find it on sale anywhere from $10.75 to $16.00 at Barnes and Nobles, Family Christian Bookstore, Walmart, Sams, etc.)  However, we have copies available for $10 at Grand Central in the front lobby of the church.  If you can not afford a book, please see Julie Baliva, our 40 Days Program Director, or indicate this on the Prayer Concern section of your Sunday Stub and we'll make sure you get one.  If you would like to help furnish a book for someone who can't afford one, please put your contribution in an envelope and mark it "40 Days of Purpose Scholarship Fund."  Some people are giving us a $20 bill and saying, "That's one for me and one for someone who can't afford it!"

5.     Participate in the Purpose Driven Prayer Walk.  You and your family can sign up to participate in the prayer walk.  It’s simple – just sign up to pray for 30 minutes for one day during the 40 days.  We hope to have at least five people to sign up for each day of the 40 days. You can come to the church anytime that day and do the prayer walk around the campus or you can pray at home or the office.  The prayer walk sign up board is in the main lobby at the Church.

    6.     Attend the Worship and Celebration on Sunday, April 4th, 8:30am - 12:30pm in the Worship Center.  This will be a day to celebrate the culmination of the 40 Days of Purpose and to hear what God has done in the lives of people throughout these 40 days.

If you have questions, need resources, want to sign up, or just want more information, visit our 40 Days of Purpose Center, Grand Central, on Sunday mornings located in the lobby.

We don’t want you to miss this life-changing experience.  We love you and can’t wait to see what God has in store for you!

The Purpose Driven Life

Since life is preparation for eternity, I want to use my time on earth fulfilling God’s five purposes for me:

I was planned for God’s pleasure (worship), so

I will use this day to get to know and love God better.

I was formed for God’s family (fellowship), so

I will use this day to show love to other believers.

I was created to become like Christ (discipleship), so

I will use this day to make choices that grow my character.

I was shaped to serve God (ministry), so

I will use this day to serve God by serving others.

I was made for a mission (evangelism), so

I will use this day to share the Good News

“David served God’s purpose in his generation…” Acts 13:36a
